General QuestionsYour health care team will be able to help you best understand the relationship between your blood sugar and the foods you eat. They can guide you in making adjustments in the amounts you eat at meals, as well as any medication adjustments to best control your blood sugar results. Blood sugar monitoring before and one to two hours after consuming a meal is the best way to determine how foods are affecting your blood sugar. The meal plans offered by Diabetes Control for Life™ are designed to help with weight management and blood sugar control through the use of a balanced selection of food choices and Glucerna products. Glucerna products help minimize peaks in blood sugar because of their specialized carbohydrate blend. Exercise, weight management, and meal planning are key components of your diabetes management plan, along with following your doctor's advice on blood sugar medication and how often you should monitor your blood sugar. Our meal plans are a step in the right direction, and we encourage you to print the meal plans and share them with your health care professional at your upcoming appointment. The amount of carbohydrates at meals and snacks depends on your calorie level and activity level, and on any diabetes medications you might be taking. For example, a dinner might be 45 to 60 grams of carbohydrates, and a snack might be between 15 and 30 grams of carbohydrates. We encourage you to complete the questionnaire and assessment on DiabetesControlForLife.com to receive your meal plan, which will provide you with an estimate of your calorie needs, as well as carbohydrate grams per meal and snack. We also suggest following up with your health care professional. We do not recommend that someone with diabetes eliminate carbohydrates. Carbohydrates are an important energy source and provide a variety of nutrients, such as vitamins and minerals. Please check with your doctor to help you understand additional ways to control your blood sugar, such as exercise, assessing your weight management goals, and assessing medication needs, if you currently are taking medications for your blood sugar. You also may consider following a lower calorie level, which would decrease the amount of carbohydrates. Fruit is a very good choice as long as the quantity you eat is selected wisely, because fruit definitely can raise blood sugar levels quickly. For example, 12 cherries are considered a serving (15 grams of carbohydrates) and one medium peach is a serving. It may be helpful to spread your fruit intake out throughout the day and check your blood sugar about one to two hours after eating to see how it is affected. Also, eating fruit after or before exercising may help keep your blood sugar from going too high. Please check with your health care professional if you continue to be concerned about your blood sugar levels. Calorie-containing beverages such as fruit juices, soft drinks, and sweetened teas can cause a fairly rapid rise in blood sugar, which is why they tend to be avoided. Our meal plans count these as food items and we encourage you to do the same if adding them to your meal plans. In other words, be sure to read the label of a fruit juice or other sweetened/sugar-containing beverage that you want to add and consider replacing that juice with a comparable menu item. DiabetesControlForLife.com lists the complete nutrition information for each food/meal. For example, instead of a half-cup of fresh fruit, consider a half-cup of orange juice. Unsweetened coffees, teas, and, of course, water, are the best non-nutritional (calorie-free) beverages to choose to help minimize spikes in blood sugar. Also, be sure to check the preparation information for each recipe because some recipes already include beverages, such as milk with breakfast cereals.
Non-caffeinated drinks, especially water, are best for hydration, especially in hot weather and while exercising. If you do drink diet soda with caffeine, practice moderation. Glucerna products are intended to help with the dietary management of diabetes under medical supervision. People without diabetes should substitute other nutritional products, such as Ensure®, AdvantEdge®, or ZonePerfect®, in place of Glucerna products in their meal plan. It is important to mention to your health care professional that you are using these products so that any medical conditions you might have can be taken into consideration. Glucerna products are appropriate for people with type 1 diabetes. It is important to monitor your sugar regularly to see how these products affect your blood sugar, as well as your insulin needs. Glucerna products contain blends of carbohydrates that are slowly digested to help minimize peaks in blood sugar. We encourage you to discuss any changes with your health care professional and, if you do intend to focus on weight loss, consult your health care professional on your specific goals. Weight loss does affect blood sugar levels and insulin needs. In people with diabetes, Glucerna products should not be used to treat hypoglycemia, insulin shock, or insulin reaction, because these products are not absorbed quickly enough to restore blood sugar to a normal level. Talk to your health care professional about appropriate treatment options for low blood sugar reactions.
It is important to point out the difference between hypoglycemia in people without diabetes and low blood sugar due to the treatment of diabetes. We have not studied Glucerna products specifically in people without diabetes with low blood sugar (called hypoglycemia). People with hypoglycemia are often told to eat a reduced-carbohydrate diet. It also is suggested that they eat several small meals/snacks per day, each meal/snack containing a small amount of carbohydrates and protein.
If a person with diabetes experiences a blood sugar below 50, food choices that have an immediately available source of glucose should be consumed. Food sources that provide 15 grams of carbohydrates, such as 3 teaspoons of honey, 1/2 cup of fruit juice, one slice of bread, 1 cup of milk, or 3/4 cup of regular soda, are options. You should check your blood sugar again 15 minutes after eating the food. If low blood sugar results continue, this should be discussed with your health care professional to determine the cause.
The meal plans on DiabetesControlForLife.com, which contain breakfast, lunch, dinner, and three snacks for each day, may help meet your needs. In the meal plans, carbohydrates contribute about 57 percent to 58 percent of the calories for one day. We recommend that you talk to your health care professional about using Glucerna products and the meal plans on the site to see if they are right for you. No specific studies have been done with Glucerna products in a population of pregnant women with diabetes or with gestational diabetes. Nursing and pregnant moms with diabetes should be aware of the vitamin and mineral nutrient contents listed on the labels and discuss their use when combined with maternal vitamins and minerals taken in addition to food choices with their doctors. Nursing and pregnant moms should consult with doctors or dietitians to see how Glucerna products would best fit into prescribed meal plans. ^TopGlucerna CerealGlucerna Cereals will be with other Glucerna products near the pharmacy section of grocery stores and major discount stores throughout the country. We have not studied Glucerna Cereals in people with hypoglycemia. People with hypoglycemia often are told to eat a reduced-carbohydrate diet. The thought is that a load of carbohydrates will cause insulin to be secreted, which will result in a lowering of the blood sugar. It also is suggested that they eat several small meals/snacks per day, each meal/snack containing a small amount of carbohydrates and protein. Glucerna Cereals do contain carbohydrates and protein. Glucerna Cereal has been shown to produce a lower sugar response than a leading corn flake cereal.1 Glucerna Cereal may be appropriate for people with hypoglycemia as a part of their overall diet, but not to treat a hypoglycemic episode (see below). Therefore, it is suggested that the consumer ask his/her health care professional if Glucerna Cereal can be incorporated into his/her diet.
Note: Glucerna Cereals should not be used to treat insulin reaction, diabetic shock, or insulin shock, because they are not absorbed quickly enough to restore blood sugar to a normal level. 1Chow J, Choe YS, Noss MJ, Baumgartner CJ, Edens NK. Diabetes 2007;56 (suppl 1): A451. Just like any other food, people with diabetes should check their blood sugar before and one to two hours after eating Glucerna Cereal to determine the effect on blood sugar. This response should be taken into consideration with their diabetes medication plan. Glucerna Cereals do not contain vitamin K. A specific study with Glucerna Cereal was not conducted; however, most cereals can be kept for two months after opening, as long as they are kept in a dry, room-temperature environment. For optimal freshness, the bag of Glucerna Cereal should be kept tightly closed inside of the carton. No, Glucerna Cereal does not contain maltitol. Yes, you can eat Glucerna Cereal at any time of day within a diabetes management plan, as directed under medical supervision. Glucerna Cereal will raise blood sugar because it contains carbohydrates, just as any other food with carbohydrates does. However, a clinical study in people with diabetes showed that Glucerna Cereal did not raise blood sugar as high as a leading corn flake cereal.1 Individual blood sugar response will vary, and blood sugar should be monitored before and one to two hours after eating Glucerna Cereal to determine the effect on blood sugar. Adding fruit to cereal will also contribute to your blood sugar response. 1Chow J, Choe YS, Noss MJ, Baumgartner CJ, Edens NK. Diabetes 2007;56 (suppl 1): A451. The recommended serving size for Glucerna Cereal is 3/4 cup. In a clinical study, subjects with type 2 diabetes consumed 1-1/2 cups (60 grams) of Glucerna Cereal with 1 cup (245 grams) of skim milk. Glycemic response data was collected.1 1Chow J, Choe YS, Noss MJ, Baumgartner CJ, Edens NK. Diabetes 2007;56 (suppl 1): A451. Yes, Glucerna Shake is packaged in reclosable plastic bottles for added convenience. Glycerine, a sugar alcohol, is an ingredient in Glucerna Shake and Snack Shakes. Glycerine is a low-glycemic carbohydrate that functions as a sweetener. Like maltitol, glycerine is classified as a sugar alcohol. However, unlike maltitol, which is only partially metabolized and provides 2 calories per gram, glycerine is completely metabolized like a carbohydrate and provides 4 calories per gram. This difference in metabolism is key to removing the risk for GI side effects.
Glycerine is declared as GRAS (Generally Recognized As Safe) by the FDA and has an upper threshold of 125 grams per day. Glycerine also may be referred to as glycerol; they are the same substance. Glycerine is listed with the ingredients on Glucerna products. The amount of glycerine in Glucerna Shake is 4.5 grams, and this is included in the total carbohydrate grams claimed on the product label.
Glucerna Shake is gluten-free and lactose-free. No, Glucerna Shake is not designed to be used for tube feeding, nor as a sole source of nutrition. The 200-calorie, 8-fl-oz shakes are available in four flavors: Creamy Chocolate Delight, Homemade Vanilla, Strawberries ‘n Cream, and Butter Pecan. Glucerna Shake is sold in six-bottle packs with the suggested retail price of $9.99. Glucerna Shake will be with other Glucerna products near the pharmacy section of retail stores throughout the country. Glucerna Shake can be used by children 9 years of age and older with the guidance of a pediatric health care professional. For children ages 4 to 8 years, Glucerna Shake should only be substituted occasionally into the meal plan by a health care professional (considering that one can of Glucerna Shake provides half of the child's estimated daily protein need and has a nutrient profile designed for adults). Glucerna Shake should not be used in children younger than 4 years of age.
Children with diabetes typically have a meal plan that is developed and adjusted with the assistance of the child's health care team (often including a pediatric dietitian, nurse, endocrinologist, and pediatrician). The child may need to balance food and beverage intake, activity, and possibly insulin. The child and family learn a system for planning meals and snacks and for making substitutions. Glucerna Shake has not been studied in the pediatric age group. However, a school-aged child who likes Glucerna Shake may be able to substitute one occasionally in the meal plan with the initial assistance of a health care professional.

Yes. Glucerna Snack Shakes are available in 8 oz. cans with completely different packaging compared to Glucerna Shakes in the 8-fl-oz bottle.
The amount of glycerine in Glucerna Snack Shakes is 3 grams, and this is included in the total carbohydrate grams claimed on the product label.
Glucerna Snack Shakes are gluten-free and lactose-free. No, Glucerna Snack Shakes are not designed to be used for tube feeding, nor as a sole source of nutrition. Glucerna Snack Shakes can be found with other Glucerna products near the pharmacy section of retail stores throughout the country. Glucerna Snack Shakes can be used by children 9 years of age and older with the guidance of a pediatric health care professional. For children ages 4 to 8 years, Glucerna Snack Shakes should only be substituted occasionally into the meal plan by a health care professional (considering that one Glucerna Snack Shake provides half of the child's estimated daily protein need and has a nutrient profile designed for adults). Glucerna Snack Shakes should not be used in children younger than 4 years of age.
Glucerna Snack Shakes have not been studied in the pediatric age group. However, a school-aged child who likes Glucerna Snack Shakes may be able to substitute one occasionally in the meal plan with the initial assistance of a health care professional.

People with hypoglycemia often are told to eat a reduced-carbohydrate diet. Glucerna Mini-Snack Bars do contain carbohydrates and protein. Glucerna Mini-Snack Bars have been shown to produce a lower sugar response than a leading snack bar. Therefore, it is suggested that a health care professional provide guidance on how Glucerna Mini-Snack Bars can be incorporated into the meal plan.
Note: Glucerna Mini-Snack Bars should not be used to treat insulin reaction, diabetic shock, or insulin shock because they are not absorbed quickly enough to restore blood sugar to a normal level.
